Star Refrigeration Unveils Future of Cooling Technology

Star Refrigeration’s latest EcoDesign Directive compliant ammonia air cooled chiller, Azanechiller 2.0, will be run tested on 8th June at their factory in Westway, Renfrew. The company is extending an open invitation to all those interested in the groundbreaking technology as well as the new EcoDesign Directive.

The UK’s largest independent cooling and heating contractor, Star Refrigeration, is opening its factory doors to invite visitors to witness the EcoDesign Directive (2009/125/EC) compliant ammonia air cooled chiller, as the first unit is run tested. The CPD certified event will also offer advice on the EcoDesign Directive to ensure businesses are producing cooling and heating effectively and efficiently in accordance with the regulation’s Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEPS), which are set to enter into force on 1 July 2016.

Under the Ecodesign Directive, new minimum energy performance standards are being introduced to eliminate inefficient chillers from the market. The new directive, which is intended to reduce CO2 emissions and save end-users millions of pounds on energy bills, awards a bonus for the use of refrigerants with low global warming potential, such as ammonia.

The new efficiency requirements will allow refrigeration end users to easily compare chiller efficiency performance by looking at two well-defined and straightforward set of figures based on the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) requirement established by the directive: the Seasonal Energy Performance Ratio (SEPR) for industrial process chillers and Seasonal Space Cooling Energy Efficiency for comfort cooling chillers. It is expected that through the use of standardised, application-based energy performance ratios, users will be able to make better and more informed decisions, which take into account 75% of the system’s total life cycle costs as opposed to focusing on capital costs alone.

The presentations will include a demonstration on the chiller’s energy efficiency figures and a run through of current Azanechiller 2.0 installations, including East Kilbride Ice Rink and a process cooling application for one of the world’s largest snack companies, along with specialist advice for a range of different market sectors.

The Azanechiller 2.0, which is said to be 71% higher than the European EcoDesign Directive requirement, is suitable for temperature controlled storage, food processing, beverage production, process cooling, HVAC, data centres, ice rinks, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries.

Alan Walkinshaw, Director of Sales – Process, says, “The Azanechiller 2.0 sets a new benchmark in chiller performance with efficiency figures that are significantly higher than the European EcoDesign Directive requirement. The Seasonal Space Cooling Energy Efficiency for comfort cooling applications is 236% and the Seasonal Energy Performance Ratio (SEPR) is 8.01 for process cooling.”

“At Star we have always placed great emphasis on the chillers’ development stages, specifically at the design and manufacturing phases to eliminate sources of energy waste. Star’s chillers have been proven to significantly reduce overall energy consumption and minimise adverse environmental impact throughout their entire life-cycle.”
