Stora Enso has signed a research and development cooperation agreement with
Metso and Domtar to establish a consortium to develop a pulp mill biorefinery.
The project, based on the latest pulping technology, aims to develop a pulp
production process with enhanced sustainability and cost efficiency, as well as
lower investment costs.

“We see promising opportunities for a breakthrough in sustainable chemical
pulping technology. The new major innovations will give stronger fibre and
improve the pulping yield. The innovations will also enable malodorous gases to
be eliminated and increase the energy efficiency of the pulp production
process,” says Jukka Kilpeläinen, Senior Vice President, Group R&D.
