Sara Hector suffered a serious injury to her left knee in Saturday's World Cup giant slalom race in Åre, Sweden. She is waiting to undergo surgery and will unfortunately miss the rest of the season.

Following the injury to her left knee during the first run of Saturday’s World Cup GS race, Sara was transported to a hospital in Östersund where an MRI and some additional examinations were conducted in the course of the afternoon.

The detailed examinations showed that Sara has damaged the cartilage on the back of her left patella, which needs to be reconstructed.
- This is a serious injury with a long rehab process and Sara will need to undergo surgery in the next few days, says the national team doctor Per Liljeholm.

The MRI showed no additional damage.
- There is no ligament damage, no bone bruises and nothing indicates that the kneecap (patella) was dislocated, so this was a completely isolated injury, continued Dr Liljeholm.

Sara is expected to require a rehab period of a minimum of six months. For the first 6-8 weeks, she will need to wear a knee brace and ensure that the patella remains immobilised.
