The municipality of Amsterdam has signed a collaboration agreement with Sweco to provide advice and civil engineering services in three extensive urban development projects. The city districts IJburg-2, Zeeburgereiland, and Overamstel are among the key initiatives for Amsterdam’s future new home supply.

Amsterdam is growing rapidly and the city has initiated a program to create to 50,000 new homes until 2025. Sweco’s experts will provide advice and services in design, engineering, procurement assistance and contract management throughout the development of the districts IJburg-2, Zeeburgereiland and Overamstel.

“We wish to make optimum use of Sweco’s expertise in order to tackle this huge challenge in the most innovative and performance-based manner possible”, Tjeerd Roozendaal, director of the Engineering Division of the Municipality of Amsterdam.

The three areas have different characteristics. IJburg 2 is a development area on reclaimed land, Overamstel is a former inner city commercial site, and Zeeburgereiland has an industrial heritage.

“These three districts are vital parts of Amsterdam’s growth plan. By creating inspiring new environments for people to live and work, Amsterdam is preparing for the future. We are committed to bring our long experience and expertise in all aspects of urban development to this project”, says Eugene Grüter, President Sweco Netherlands.

The municipality of Amsterdam has estimated the contract value at EUR 1 million per year. The agreement runs through April 2021 with four further one-year options for continuation.
