Sobi™ Cycle bike ride from Mainz to Brussels raises funds, awareness for haemophilia

A team of cyclists from Sobi™ have biked from Mainz to Brussels 2-4 October to help raise funds for people with haemophilia as well as awareness about the condition.

SobiCycle 2018 is the third Sobi charity bike ride to raise funds for the European Haemophilia Consortium (EHC). This year the team of Sobi cyclists pedalled from Mainz in Germany to arrive at the EHC Conference 5-7 October in Brussels, Belgium. The three-day bike ride is meeting up with the EHC campaign #thisway, counting down the kilometres to Brussels in the lead-up to the EHC Conference.

The EHC is an international non-profit organisation representing around 90,000 people across 27 countries in the EU. Its goals include improving quality of life for people with bleeding disorders and improving understanding and treatment of bleeding disorders.

As well as raising funds for the EHC, SobiCycle also aims to create awareness about haemophilia and the benefits of an active life for people with the condition.

Strong muscles help support the joints and provide better balance and bodily control. People with haemophilia should therefore be encouraged to be physically active but must remember to take their medication regularly to ensure they are protected. It is important that anyone with haemophilia discusses physical activity with their haemophilia care team.

The team itself is also vital aspect of the ride. “Team Sobi” is a group of Sobi employees from across Europe, a mix of dedicated semi-professionals and people who normally just bike to work. The charity bike ride is not a race, but rather a team event where all team members work together to ensure everyone reaches the final destination. Team Sobi is riding 390 km over three days. The journey has taken the participants from Mainz along the Rhine Valley in Germany, past the historic city of Maastricht in the Netherlands, to arrive at the capital of Belgium, Brussels today 4 October.

On the last leg of the ride, SobiCycle 2018 is linking up with representatives from the EHC and its national member organisations representing people with haemophilia, who are cycling 30 km from Leuven to Brussels as part of their #thisway campaign for the 2018 EHC conference.
