Europe's Paradigm for Solving Grand Societal Challenges

Today, multiple industry sectors are facing disruption and discontinuity. To innovate faster and navigate better in times of uncertainty, corporations need to develop new collaborative innovation models and integrate start-up companies into their innovation processes. This is even more challenging as growth requires collaboration locally as well as globally. However, few CEOs, entrepreneurs, policy makers, or university leaders know how to accomplish this. Author, speaker, and thought leader Dr. Daria Tataj has the answer, and she details it in her new book, Innovation and Entrepreneurship: A Growth Model for Europe Beyond the Crisis (Tataj Innovation Library, September 2015). By analyzing diverse innovation networks in the United States, China, and with a special emphasis on Europe, Dr. Tataj answers the question, "Why do innovation hubs emerge, and how can this process be replicated?" In her book, Dr. Tataj, demonstrates the mechanisms that allow innovation hubs to attract global talent, risk capital, and accumulate knowledge.

Europe needs a new model for growth based on innovation and entrepreneurship. But how can it make a shift from traditional industry to open innovation, from a research university to an entrepreneurial university, from a fragmented innovation ecosystem to a highly networked and global innovation hub? Dr. Tataj's Innovation and Entrepreneurship proposes a comprehensive, scalable model to make innovations succeed globally on a massive scale. She says, "Humanity faces grand challenges related to climate change, sustainable energy, and digital society. Europe has great research, education and innovation, yet there is not enough entrepreneurship to create growth and jobs, and to bring innovative solutions to the markets and to society faster." Using the model proposed in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Europe’s innovation capacity can help solve these grand challenges.

The model offers one stop, practice-based, comprehensive research demonstrating how to accelerate the innovation process from labs to markets and how to create high-growth companies and vibrant innovation ecosystems. Global thought leaders are embracing Dr. Tataj’s approach to innovation. For example, according to  Professor Manuel Castells, who wrote the book’s Preface, “This is a fundamental, innovative book on innovation that will reshape the way we think about innovation and may yield the most needed policy lessons for a new model of growth in the aftermath of the economic crisis.”

Building on new research and years of experience with the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, Dr. Tataj describes the dynamic architecture of global innovation networks. From how these networks overlap to how a switching capacity between them leads to accumulation of talent, knowledge and capital. The EIT’s Knowledge and Innovation Communities deliver hundreds of new companies, offer entrepreneurship classes to thousands of students across Europe’s best universities and help European industry innovate faster and better. The whole initiative will involved over 10 billion EUR of innovation funding in Europe in the coming years.
