Break the Silence on Suicide with Poetry this World Suicide Prevention Day

Losing a loved one to suicide can be the most devastating thing to happen in a family. Coping strategies become vital. What can they do? How can they go on?

New research argues that engaging with emotion is crucial to overcoming loss. It warns against using ‘medical management to quell the impact of loss’, arguing that ‘medical warfare rends grief an act of defeat rather than a necessary response to loss.’

Instead, it uses poetry as a means of exploring the emotions of loss.

Throughout the article, poetry is recognized as a form of legitimate expression; ‘a means of telling that matters’.

Poetry gives voice to intensity of loss and allows readers to resonate through the emotional experiences of their own losses

The article contains poems written by Daniel G. Scott, who has the following to say:

”Loss is common to all humans from young to old and articulating loss is necessary for emotional and spiritual health.

For me, poetry allows me to speak of loss, open space for it.  Poetry gives dignity to the complex journey of grieving and interrupts the secrecy and loneliness of loss.

Those who remain after a suicide have an especially difficult experience of loss and so finding forms that allow that loss to be processed is vital.  It cannot be borne alone.”

Thought provoking and emotive, the research encourages you to engage with your emotions as a means of beginning the healing process.

As the number of deaths due to suicide continues to increase, it’s important to break the silence and raise awareness in time for World Suicide Prevention Day on the 10th of September.
