The emotional life of parents and babies

By Dilys Daws and Alexandra de Rementeria

Nothing else in your life changes you so much as becoming a parent. Caring for a baby in the first year can be a wondrous and joyful experience. However, every new parent experiences doubt, anxiety and other difficult feelings in relation to their baby. This darker side of family life is often glossed over in parenting books. Finding Your Way with Your Baby tackles these issues head on; it empowers new parents to acknowledge troubling emotions, learn from their baby and find their own solutions.

Combining the wisdom of many years’ work and scholarship with the latest research, Dilys Daws and Alexandra de Rementeria engage with the most challenging parenting experiences – such as difficult pregnancies, birth, bonding, ambivalence, depression and the emotional turmoil so often brought to the surface by becoming a new parent. They do so in a way that is deeply informed by psychoanalytic understandings, infant observation, developmental science and decades of clinical experience.

As described by the authors, “this is the baby book that doesn’t tell you what to do”. Instead, through real-life examples, references to current thinking and a warm writing style, Daws and Rementeria encourage parents to bear uncertainty and take control over their own family life. They also provide new insight into commonly covered issues such as feeding, weaning, sleeping and crying.

“This is a new and much needed kind of parenting book,” Graham Music, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, describes; “parents will feel that their own and their baby’s most complex experiences are compassionately understood and made sense of.” Whilst this book is primarily aimed at parents, it will be a helpful resource for health visitors, midwives, social workers, GPs, paediatricians and childcare workers.
