Support children’s creative writing with the new Descriptosaurus books by Alison Wilcox

Alison Wilcox’s exciting new books, Descriptosaurus: Action and Adventure and Descriptosaurus: Ghost Stories, will inspire children to put pen to paper and take their writing to the next level. Following on from the success of the bestselling Descriptosaurus, these essential guides will provide children with the tools they need to produce colourful cinematic writing.

In 2013, Alison Wilcox collaborated with The National Literacy Trust on a descriptive writing competition for children aged between three and nine. The breadth and quality of the response was astounding. However, it quickly became clear that although many children had great imaginations, they found it difficult to express their ideas in a coherent, written form. Wilcox took inspiration from the children’s choice of genre, and wrote Descriptosaurus: Action and Adventure and Ghost Stories in response to their interests. Both books arm children with the skills, techniques, and vocabulary necessary to bring their boundless ideas to life.

The recent National Literacy Trust research highlighted that the image of writing as an ‘acceptable activity’ continues to decline, particularly amongst boys,” explains Alison Wilcox. “My hope is that Descriptosaurus: Action and Adventure and Descriptosaurus: Ghost Stories will give pupils an exciting and fun tool to use to create action-packed stories, full of suspense and excitement that builds on their existing interests and passions, and will, hopefully create an enthusiasm to write.

National Literacy Trust Director Jonathan Douglas agrees: “being able to express yourself through writing is a vital part of effective communication. Using descriptive vocabulary brings places and characters alive for the reader. Stories like those by Alison Wilcox provide young minds with the inspiration they need to start writing their own adventures.

At a time when too much media attention is given to the apparent decreasing standards in schools, Alison Wilcox is determined to support and encourage the outstanding young writers and teachers in our classrooms today. Her new books, Descriptosaurus: Action and Adventure and Descriptosaurus: Ghost Stories, will help even the most reluctant writers commit their visions to paper.
