Teachers Assurance, a UK based provider of savings, investments and insurance, is proud to be sponsoring the Let Teachers SHINE competition for a second consecutive year, pledging £50,000 with the support of Teachers Group Educational Trust (TGET). The competition is open to inspiring teachers who have a brilliant, fresh idea to share on how to raise the attainment of disadvantaged children in English, maths or science.

The project, now in its fifth year, is run by the SHINE Trust, a national charity that provides teacher led interventions for disadvantaged young people. Last year’s success saw over 100 entries, with winning proposals including story-based orienteering using tablets and a tutoring service where sixth form students deliver weekly one-to-one tutorials in English and maths to younger students.

Entries to this year’s competition will be shortlisted and the chosen teachers invited to pitch their proposals in more detail. The judging panel, including a representative from Teachers Assurance, will then select up to ten projects to receive a grant of up to £15,000 each in order to pilot their winning programme for a year.

Laura Bentham, Public Relations Team Leader at Teachers Assurance, comments on the organisation’s involvement in the competition: “We’re excited to be supporting the Let Teachers SHINE competition again in 2015. Since participating last year, we’ve received regular updates on the success of the winning proposals and it’s been hugely rewarding hearing how the ideas we encouraged have flourished into inspiring pilots. We’re pleased that these inspirational teachers have delivered innovative projects that have gone on to change the learning lives of the children involved and are pleased to be pledging funds again this year to help launch more of these valuable projects.”

Paul Carbury, SHINE CEO, comments: “We’re delighted to have the support of Teachers Assurance as part of Let Teachers SHINE for the second year running. Their strategic and financial support has enabled Let Teachers SHINE to continue to grow and enable more teachers to reach disadvantaged young people. We hope that this year we are once again able to find inspirational teachers with fantastic ideas who are making huge differences to the lives of their pupils.”

The Let Teachers SHINE competition is open to any qualified teacher working in England with students aged up to 18. The deadline for applications is the 27th April 2015 and to find out more or to enter visit the Shine website.
