Television presenter and outdoor enthusiast, Julia Bradbury, has been elected the new President of The Camping and Caravanning Club.

The 43-year-old was chosen by Club members at Saturday’s AGM in County Durham and will succeed botanist David Bellamy who had held the position previously for 11 years.

Bradbury was the Club’s natural choice due to her passion for the great outdoors and strong relationship with its members, having helped to launch and promote key Club initiatives over the last four years including: ‘Real Richness’, ‘Real Richness – The Awards’ and ‘New to Camping’.

She is best known as one of BBC One’s Countryfile presenters, and recently hosted the ITV teatime game show, Take on the Twisters.

In addition, she has presented Wainwright’s Walks, Railway Walks, The Rough Guide to …, Secret Britain, South Africa Walks, The Great British Countryside, That’s Britain, Watchdog, Planet Earth Live, Fightback Britain and Mystery Map to name but a few.

Bradbury is delighted to have been elected as the Club’s 11th President and said: “I have always been a keen advocate of the outdoor lifestyle ever since my dad took me out walking into the Peak District after school and at weekends, and camping and caravanning is a priceless chance to get closer to nature and back in touch with who you really are.

“I have had the pleasure of working with the Club for several years, so to now have been elected as President is a true honour and one that I plan to immerse myself in.

“As I’m following in David’s footsteps, I’ve certainly got high expectations to live up to!”

Bellamy will now become a Vice President of the Club.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed every second of my time with the Club and will treasure some fond memories – it’s an historic organisation and it’s been an honour to meet many of the members than help to run, support and enjoy this popular pastime.

“I wish Julia all the best of luck in her position; I’m convinced she’ll be an exceptional addition to the Club.”

Robert Louden MBE, the Club’s Director General, added: “We’re delighted to officially welcome Julia and we look forward to working with her over the coming years. It is a terrific coup for us.

“The President is the figurehead of the Club and we couldn’t think of anyone more naturally suited to the role than Julia. She symbolises what we are all about and continues to grow in stature as an outdoor supporter and television personality.

“We’d also like to thank David for his true dedication and commitment over the last 11 years. There is simply never a dull moment when David Bellamy is around.”

Bradbury will make regular appearances for the Club throughout the year and will also write a quarterly column in the Club’s monthly magazine, Camping & Caravanning, which has a circulation of 267,184.
