April 7, 2014  CHICAGO – The Chicago Council on Global Affairs announced today that Glenn F. Tilton, chairman of the Midwest for JPMorgan Chase, has been named executive vice chairman of its board of directors. Tilton will eventually succeed Lester Crown as chairman of the Council’s board. The timing of that succession has yet to be determined. Crown has served as chairman of The Chicago Council since 2004.

Until December 2012, Tilton, 65, also served as non-executive chairman of the board of directors of United Continental Holdings Inc., following the merger between United and Continental Airlines in 2010. From 2002 to 2010, Tilton was chairman, president, and CEO of UAL Corporation.

"I am delighted that Glenn has agreed to serve as executive vice chairman of the Council’s board of directors," Crown, chairman of Henry Crown and Company, said. "Glenn shares the board’s objective of increasing The Chicago Council’s stature among the premier institutions in the country on world affairs."

“Glenn has been a member of the Council’s board since 2011 and has recently taken on a lead role in our work on Global Cities,” said Ambassador Ivo H. Daalder, president of The Chicago Council on Global Affairs.  “I am extremely pleased that Lester will continue as chairman of the board and look forward to working closely with Lester and Glenn.”

"I am excited by this opportunity,” said Tilton.  "Lester, Ivo and the board have set a bold vision for the Council, and I am eager to work together to further the Council’s ability to generate new ideas about the critical issues confronting the nation and the world.”

As chairman, president and CEO of UAL Corporation, Tilton led the company through a $23 billion restructuring, returned the company to profitability and successfully completed the merger with Continental Airlines.

Prior to joining United, having completed the merger of Texaco and Chevron, Tilton was vice chairman of the board of directors of ChevronTexaco, as well as interim chairman of Dynegy Inc. Up to that time, he served as chairman of the board and CEO of Texaco Inc., a position he assumed in February 2001.

In 2010, Tilton was named by President Obama to the President’s Export Council and by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to the Future of Aviation Advisory Committee. He is also on the board of directors of Abbott Laboratories, AbbVie, Phillips 66, and Northwestern Memorial Healthcare.

In July 2013, Tilton was named board chairman of Skills for Chicagoland’s Future. In 2011, he was named as chairman of the American Cancer Society’s national program, CEOs Against Cancer. Tilton also serves on the boards for World Business Chicago Executive Committee, the Commercial Club of Chicago Civic Committee, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Executives’ Club of Chicago, the Field Museum, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Big Shoulders Fund, After School Matters, and the 100 Club of Chicago.
