News release

27th March 2014

The new UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) resource web site, Pinpoint, has gone live and was designed and built by London-based integrated agency, the Think Tank.

The site, which encourages users to share information and best practice, needed to be developed to further increase engagement and usability. The Think Tank was approached by the UKGBC to review the website and recommend how to improve registration, resource addition and engagement. On winning the brief, a detailed review of the site was undertaken including a critique of how the site could be updated to improve visibility and engagement. The website has seen an increase in visitors and contributors, with visitors increasing by 55% and new visitors by 61% from organic traffic sources, since its re-launch.

An invaluable resource-based platform for those working within the built environment, Pinpoint incorporates content around the themes of green building design, sustainability and the environment, uploaded by the visitors and users themselves.

Although the site was initially launched in 2013 and had a steady stream of contributors and visitors, the UKGBC thought that it could create more impact and engagement. Working closely with the UKGBC team, the Think Tank identified where improvements to design and functionality could be made to deliver a fresh look and feel for the site, and a higher level of interaction and user accessibility.

Natalia Ford, Sustainability Officer at UKGBC, said: “We’re delighted with the new look of Pinpoint. The Think Tank has delivered a different look and feel, as well as adding new  functionality that improves the user experience of the site by making it easier to navigate and more accessible. With these changes, we’re expecting the reach of the new site to be greatly improved.”

The website features several ways to search for resources, including an advanced filtering system, cross-referencing of articles between authors and organisations, allowing the user to quickly find information and who has contributed them, and allows users to comment and share content.

Pinpoint is open to all, and any user can submit articles, case studies, research, training and other resources that relate to green building; these are then checked and moderated to ensure authenticity.

The back-end management of this process and that of registration of both users and contributors was important to improve efficiency. The Think Tank developed simple and intuitive tools within their own bespoke content management system to ensure that the UKGBC team was able to manage the site quickly and effectively.

Liam Bateman, Director at the Think Tank commented: “This has been a great project to work on with the UKGBC and we are looking forward to helping them to further the reach of Pinpoint in the construction sector, both in the UK and internationally.”

The Think Tank will be working with UKGBC on other digital projects over the coming months including the further integration and development of the Pinpoint website.

About UK Green Building Council

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) is a membership organisation campaigning for a sustainable built environment – one that minimises negative environmental impacts while maximising benefits for people everywhere. Their mission is to radically improve the sustainability of the built environment, by transforming the way it is planned, designed, constructed, maintained and operated.

They are concerned with homes and non-domestic buildings – new and existing – as well as the infrastructure that binds the built environment together.

Launched in 2007 to offer clarity, cohesion and leadership to a disparate sector, they bring together anyone involved in the complex process of planning, designing, constructing, maintaining and operating buildings. A registered charity, they work with their members – who are mostly businesses, but also not-for-profit organisations, government agencies and academic institutions – to enable them to truly embed sustainability in their business practices.
