An innovative new concept rooted in martial arts
Martial artist Richard Hughes applies principles of martial arts to many other areas of life
The Mind-Forged Sword teaches readers how to derive principles from a wide range of situations, refine them through study and apply them into new situations. Richard extracts and expands upon the core concepts from The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi and The Art of War by Sun Tzu.
A practised swordsman and martial artist himself, Richard currently teaches martial arts classes at Loughborough University. He is also skilled in the use of multiple weapons and styles. His studies on martial theory gave him a wider scope upon which to develop a system that develops the individual by the use of style – rather than fit the style to the individual.
Through understanding the principles that lie at the core of combat Richard enables readers to establish and utilise the methods that lead to success. Principles can be derived and iterated upon, in order to provide a more universal approach, rather than dealing in specific details. This is simply a principle applied in a situation. Understanding the root elements allows you to develop and diversify tactics, which will develop a unique method tied directly to your own study and knowledge.
Through knowledge, readers gain insight.
Through application, they refine and adapt.
Through understanding, they are able to apply themselves.
The book’s roots are in military strategy and martial arts, but Richard hopes that his lessons will help readers uncover a wider range of principles that apply in many other walks of life.
Review copies are available on request, and Richard is available for interview.
