TOMRA today announced the launch of T-9, the first of a new generation of reverse vending machines (RVMs) based on TOMRA Flow Technology™. T-9 features the first ever 360 degree recognition system applied inside an RVM and enables faster and cleaner collection of beverage containers, even containers that until now could not be collected in reverse vending machines.

“With T-9, TOMRA has improved what matters most to our customers”, says Håkon Volldal, Executive Vice President and Head of TOMRA Collection Solutions. “It will significantly improve the consumer experience by increasing capacity and minimizing queues in stores during peak hours.”

When a container is inserted, the unique and patented TOMRA Flow Technology™ system instantly reads the barcode and security mark. “This differs from all other RVMs where the container has to be stopped in order to rotate it into the right reading position,” Volldal explains. “As containers can now be inserted in a continuous fast flow, the user determines the speed limit, not the machine.”

Moreover, T-9 is also designed with the operator’s perspective on daily maintenance. With less cleaning required of the exterior as well as of interior parts, workloads can be considerably lowered for store employees.

Significant innovation

“We have developed a range of exciting innovative solutions to create dramatic improvements in selected product features like simplicity, speed, cleanliness and ability to handle all container types,” comments Geir Sæther, Head of R&D in TOMRA Collection Solutions. “By replacing complex mechatronics with state of the art solid state electronics, new solutions to old challenges are realized which we believe will set the standard for reverse vending in the decade to come.”

The first T-9 model launched today is for single containers. In late October, a model for both single containers and crates will be introduced.

T-9 is initially available in Germany, Sweden, Norway and Finland, whereas other markets follow throughout 2014.
