Technology giant Bosch visits local school to put the fun back into engineering
- The Bosch ‘All Around You’ Schools Roadshow visits Copleston High school to show the fun side of engineering
- Interactive demonstrations get students involved and inspired about an engineering career
On Friday 6th March, students at Copleston High School were visited by Bosch as part of their annual education campaign, the Bosch ‘All Around You’ Roadshow.
The specially-designed interactive stage show aims to show students how important engineering is to everyday life. From demonstrating the workings of the car on the drive to the design expertise that goes into developing a power tool, students were given a chance to take part in the activities, with some hands-on demonstrations.
Bosch UK, which has a lawn and garden manufacturing plant in nearby Stowmarket, developed the roadshow in response to research which found that many secondary school students were not considering engineering as a future career because they felt they didn’t know enough about it.
In 2014, Semta – the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies – said that the UK would face a shortfall of 80,000 employees equipped with these skills in the next two years.
Miss Alex Curtis, Head of Year 8 at Copleston High School said: “We want to encourage our students to consider all sorts of careers by showing them the opportunities available. The Bosch ‘All Around You’ Roadshow highlights the diversity of a career in engineering – the show was great fun and the presenter’s passion for engineering was infectious. The students were really buzzing with enthusiasm afterwards. We are looking forward to having a go at making our own hovercraft with the kits that Bosch has also provided.”
Peter Fouquet, President of Bosch UK, added: “Inspiring a new generation of engineers is vital to ensuring the future of the very important engineering sector in the UK. By showing the fun side of engineering, we believe that students will become more curious about engineering and technology and will be more likely to pursue a career in this industry in the future.”
Research carried out by Atomik Research in December 2013 with a survey size of 1,051 students aged 13-16
