ARLINGTON, Texas – Dr. Paul J. Fadel, a prominent physiology integrative researcher and expert in neural cardio-vascular control in health and disease, will join The University of Texas at Arlington College of Nursing and Health Innovation this fall from the University of Missouri School of Medicine as the College expands its health science focus.

Dr. Fadel will serve as a professor of kinesiology and director of clinical translational science at UTA. He joins a growing team of distinguished faculty members who will advance the University’s human-based research in areas involving the cardiovascular system, movement, healthy living and the disease process, among others.

Dr. Fadel’s recent studies have focused on issues such as blood flow control in diabetic patients, the impact of physical inactivity on cardio-vascular health and mechanisms triggering sympathetic nervous system overactivity and hypertension in patients with chronic kidney disease. His work is supported by the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health, among other agencies.

“What’s going on at UTA is very exciting – we will have one of the largest groups of investigators performing human-based research in a number of areas asking the critical questions in human health and disease. I don’t think you’ll find that anywhere else in the country,” said Fadel, who begins his appointment Sept. 1. “We all have an area of expertise, but we will have opportunities every day to collaborate and advance important research questions using a multidisciplinary approach.”

Dr. Fadel’s appointment is supported in part by the University of Texas System Science and Technology Acquisition and Retention, or STARS program. The program provides additional startup funding needed to attract scholars with exceptional records of research, teaching, and creative activity.

The College of Nursing and Health Innovation has recruited several other prominent faculty this summer including Dr. Marco Brotto, an internationally recognized expert in muscle and bone physiology; and Dr. Mark Haykowsky, an internationally renowned researcher in exercise physiology and rehabilitation medicine who will hold UTA’s Moritz Chair of Geriatric Nursing Research.

In line with the University’s Strategic Plan 2020: Bold Solutions | Global Impact and its goal of strengthening research and academic contributions under the theme of Health and the Human Condition, additional appointments are expected in this area including in other colleges.

“We are building upon the considerable strength of UTA’s internationally known nursing and kinesiology programs and expanding our impact by attracting some of the most prominent health and medical science researchers in areas that affect our ability to live longer, healthier lives,” President Vistasp M. Karbhari said. “Our ability to recruit these outstanding faculty speaks to the growing international reputation of the institution fueled by the tremendous work being done by our faculty, staff and students.

“Health care is a critical and growing sector in Arlington and of the North Texas economy, and UTA is not only preparing the workforce to fill critical needs, but we are advancing research that will inform therapies and best practices worldwide.”

Anne Bavier, dean of the UTA College of Nursing and Health Innovation, said Dr. Fadel’s proven record of collaboration on projects that have attracted national funding will compound the College’s success in kinesiology and physiology.

“We are thrilled that Dr. Fadel is bringing his innovative approach to research and acumen to our College,” Bavier said. “Dr. Fadel has the capacity to mentor young scientists and also to collaborate across unique expertise and other disciplines. He will help us exponentially grow the UTA health science research portfolio.”

Dr. Fadel earned his undergraduate degree in physical education at Brooklyn College in New York and his master’s in clinical exercise Physiology from Northeastern University in Boston.  He holds a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

Before joining the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Dr. Fadel completed a post-doctoral fellowship and later served as an assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Fadel is an author of more than 100 publications and serves on the editorial board of Experimental Physiology and the Journal of Applied Physiology, among others.
