Bronx, NY January 15, 2014― The Van Lier Visual Artist Fellowship at Wave Hill provides a remarkable experience for two young artists from culturally diverse backgrounds to develop the skills and professional credentials needed to establish a successful career as visual artists. A jewel of a garden and cultural center, Wave Hill offers a series of unique opportunities keyed to the inspiring natural landscape surrounding Glyndor Gallery. Van Lier Fellows participate in Wave Hill’s six-week Winter Workspace program as artists in residence, create solo shows in the Sunroom Project Space in the fall, are mentored by curatorial staff and work with artists and arts professionals to define career paths. We are pleased to announce the 2014 Van Lier Fellows, Alexandra Phillips and Tammy Nguyen.

2013 Van Lier Fellow Francisco Donosorecently reflected on his time at Wave Hill: “I was able to devote myself fully to my work and explore new ideas, processes and materials. The Winter Workspace and Sunroom programs helped introduce me to new artists I wasn’t aware of and allowed me to develop what will be long-lasting relationships and friendships with other great artists, as well as with the curatorial team. The fellowship also gave me exposure to a new audience and other art professionals. I feel better prepared and equipped to continue seeking career opportunitie

Not every artist under 30 can boast that they’ve inaugurated an artist residency. 2014 Van Lier Fellow, Alexandra Phillips has. This past September, Phillips used Kickstarter to fund her stay in Greece when she was invited to be the first visual artist in residence at The Vyrsodepseio, located in Votanikos, an area only two miles from the Acropolis that has become infamous as a no-man’s land with a rich and curious history. Phillips’ work capitalizes on the notion that the whole is greater than its parts, as she fabricates multiple versions of collected found objects, mimicking the bombardment that city dwellers experience daily. As a Van Lier Fellow, she will be continuing this work and exploring Wave Hill’s surroundings to inspire sculptural installations that will fill the Sunroom’s unique space.

Tammy Nguyen’s achievements include a Fulbright Scholarship, as well as an MFA from Yale. Nguyen’s work draws on her Vietnamese heritage and portrays culturally-specific mythologies, family history and scientific processes, such as taxidermy, to create intricate paintings, prints and books. For her work in the Sunroom Project Space, Nguyen will continue her work with sculptural artist books, this time drawing on the room’s relaxing ambience. Nguyen will create a reading area that will invite visitors to experience books that may be “shaped like one of Wave Hill’s cacti, but when opened, could be turned into a river that carries you to a different time.”
