Wave Hill Inspires Artistic Creativity This Summer

Bronx, NY, May 30, 2014— Let the warm summer sun and lush green landscapes inspire you during a whole new season of art workshops at Wave Hill! With guidance from professional artists, practice and enhance techniques in various media.

Early Morning Nature Photography    ONE SESSION ONLY

THU, June 5, 7:30–10:30AM

Calling all nature photographers! Don’t miss this special opportunity to capture the early morning light and tranquil garden views before the gates open to the public. Photographer Benjamin Sweet works with participants to solve problems particular to early morning photography and to explore shadow and brightness in their images. This session combines outdoor photography with reviews of student’s work.

Sunset Sketch    THREE SESSION WORKSHOP

WED, July 23, 30, August 6, 6PM–8PM

Use pencil, pen and ink wash to make quick sketches inspired by the dynamic sights and sounds of Sunset Wednesdays at Wave Hill. Artist Wennie Huang provides hands-on demonstrations and individual guidance as you capture the landscape, the activity of visitors and the strong silhouettes cast by the sun as it sets over the Palisades.

Landscape Painting: The Many Shades of Green     SIX-SESSION WORKSHOP THU, July 24, 31, August 7, 14, 21, 28, 10AM–1PM

Wave Hill is cloaked in infinite shades of green. Working from direct observation of the landscape, learn to distinguish the subtleties between these hues and capture them in oil paint. Artist Rachel Wren offers demonstrations, individual guidance and gentle critiques to help you gain the skills you need to translate the complex forms of nature into the language of painting. All levels welcome.

Creative Actions     TWO SESSIONS

Engage in a creative dialogue with your surroundings, guided by professional artists and artisans working in various materials, processes and techniques during these two weekend workshops. Bring a friend! Space is limited. Drop-ins accommodated as space permits.  Sign up for one or both workshops.

Session 1: Bookbinding – Create Your Own Book Journal, SAT, July 26, 10AM–1PM Inspired by the colors, textures and natural forms found at Wave Hill, practice the art of bookbinding with artist Jessica Lagunas. Create a simple pamphlet book using beautiful St. Armand hand-made, recycled paper, then learn how to bind pages with needle and thread. Finally, learn a few interesting techniques to personalize and decorate your book cover. Use your beautifully crafted book as a personal journal or bring it to the second Creative Actions workshop on August 9.

Session 2: Botanical Illustration and Observation, SAT, August 9, 10AM–1PM

Observe and document the intricate details and forms of plants and flowers found in the gardens. With artist and naturalist Gabriel Willow, practice techniques of botanical illustration using pen and pencil. Bring your own journal from the first Creative Actions workshop or use paper provided by the instructor.
