Bronx, NY January 29, 2014—Wave Hill is now accepting applications for two dynamic, paid internship programs for high school students. To provide students with more information about each program and the application process, Wave Hill educational staff would be delighted to make a brief, 10 to 20-minute presentation at area schools during the coming weeks. It is most effective to present to groups of 15 to 30 students; several presentations can be made in one day.

Woodland Ecology Research Mentorship (WERM)

July 2014–August 2015

Currently open to high school sophomores and juniors, this 14-month program provides participants with a unique opportunity to participate in ecological research projects under the mentorship of local scientists. Rigorous, hands-on fieldwork and two, tuition-free college courses at Lehman College, in Environmental Conservation and GIS Mapping, during their first summer, culminate in a research project. Students who are dedicated and interested in excelling in this unique setting—but are not necessarily the highest achievers—are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be organized, dependable, self motivated and willing to make the necessary time commitment. The application deadline for this program is March 2, 2014.  For more information about this program and to access the online application please visit wavehill.org/education/woodland-ecology-research-mentorship/

Forest Project Summer Collaborative

June 27–August 16, 2014

With more than 32 years of experience, the Forest Project Summer Collaborative is one of the nation’s longest running youth development internships focusing on urban ecology and encouraging students to explore the natural environment in an urban setting. Open to current sophomores, juniors and seniors, Forest Project Interns work in small, supervised crews to help restore woodland areas at Wave Hill, as well as earn three tuition-free college credits by taking either Environmental Conservation or GIS Mapping at Lehman College. This seven-week program meets Monday through Friday. The application deadline for this program is March 23, 2014.  For more information about the program and to access the online application please visit wavehill.org/education/forest-project/
