Educational Programs Offered for Grades Six through Eight Select Days in October 2015-May 2016

Wave Hill is pleased to announce that it will partner with Con Edison to present Con Edison STEM Days Out, a new initiative focused on connecting public school children grades six through eight with meaningful learning opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The free program will be offered to children in New York City and Westchester public schools.

A public garden and cultural center in the northwest corner of the Bronx, Wave Hill’s 28 acres are home to generations of children who do some of their most thrilling out-of-classroom learning here—many of them in Wave Hill’s instructor-led, cross-curricular programs that engage students with critical thinking, thoughtful observation and inquiry-based exploration to create meaningful engagement with the natural world.  Building upon Wave Hill’s established educational programs for high school students, which include the Forest Project and Woodland Ecology Research Mentorship (WERM), Con Edison STEM Days Out at Wave Hill will focus on Restoring the Urban Forest, allowing middle-school students to use Wave Hill’s 8-acre woodland as a living laboratory. During two-hour sessions, students will engage in data collection and analysis as they explore current issues relating to forest regeneration, wildlife habitat and management, as well as existing threats to the woodland environment.

Con Edison’s STEM Days Out is a free program for all New York City and Westchester public school classes in grades six through eight. Wave Hill is one of only two Bronx locations participating in the initiative. For applications and to make a reservation to participate in a Con Edison STEM Days Out, please contact Linda Allen at 718.549.3200 237. Space is limited, and early reservations are recommended.
