Havells, a specialist in low voltage switchgear, has partnered with Sussex Downs College to provide their electrical installation apprentices with its latest switchgear technology. Supplying over £4,000 worth of electrical equipment, Havells’ aim is to give apprentices the opportunity to train and hone their skills on products that are designed with the future of electrical installation in mind.

Keen to support the local community, Havells, which shares a 200-strong facility in Newhaven with parent company Havells-Sylvania, is based right in the centre of the Sussex Downs catchment area. This made the college, which has three campuses in East Sussex, an ideal company partner. The electrical installation department is located at the Eastbourne campus and it is here that 60 apprentices train for a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation. The first phase of the Havells equipment (consumer units and devices) was presented by Mike Lawrence, UK Marketing Manager and Jonathan Lim, Communications Manager from Havells to Melanie Hunt, Principal and Jeff Hayes, Curriculum Leader from Sussex Downs College.

As well as presenting the equipment to the students, Mike also talked to the apprentices about how to use the kit both in a training environment and out in the workplace. He also explained the growing importance of energy efficiency to the electrical trade, and how understanding the monitoring and metering of electrical supplies will be a key skill set for the apprentices as they progress through their careers.

“We are delighted to have formed this relationship with Havells as they are such a forward thinking company. The future of electrical switchgear is tied to the increasing demand for energy efficiency and the team at Havells are developing products that are breaking new ground in this area,” comments Melanie Hunt, Principal and Chief Executive at Sussex Downs College. “It is reassuring that our electrical apprentices are honing their practical skills on future-proof products and building their knowledge of the wider trends within the electrical contracting industry.”

Commenting on the partnership, Mike Lawrence, UK Marketing Manager at Havells said: "Havells is proud to support the next generation of electrical installers. As our warehouse and factory are based in Newhaven, this is a great opportunity to work with Sussex Downs College to train and support the best in class apprentices and students with the best in class products. Hopefully, this is a beginning of a closer relationship that will benefit young electricians in the area for years to come, with Havells investing time to help apprentices really understand the challenges they will face in the ever evolving electrical industry.”

Jeff Hayes, Curriculum Leader in Electrical Installation at Sussex Downs College, said: “Thanks to the generous supply of this equipment from Havells, we have been able to upgrade our existing switchgear to keep up with the latest industry standards. It is great that our apprentices now have the chance to get hands-on with the latest kit on offer to the trade. It gives them a real taste of what to expect out on-site.”
