The Scandinavian music streaming service WiMP by Aspiro Music reaches 300,000 paying customers, after rapid growth during spring. In Norway, 100,000 Canal Digital customers have activated the service.

The number of users of Aspiro’s music service is thus tripled since the start of the year, when it had 100,000 registered users. The service reached 200,000 subscribers at the beginning of May, after launching in Sweden, and now the number has increased further to 300,000

”More people are discovering the benefits with our service, and the last month we have seen particularly rapid growth in Norway via Canal Digital, but also in Sweden and Portugal. In Denmark, we are increasing our initiatives this summer to open even more Danish consumer’s eyes to music streaming”, says CEO of Aspiro Gunnar Sellæg.

WIMP is currently available in four countries: Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Portugal, the latter via a white label service, and a new service is expected to launch this fall in Ireland.

In Norway, Canal Digital offers 700,000 customers WiMP included in the TV subscription and the television distributor can now report of high interest in a short time.

”Within three months, 100,000 of our TV customers have enabled the music service, equivalent to all the inhabitants of two medium sized Norwegian municipalities. We have received very positive feedback on our comprehensive television and music offerings, and are very happy that so many have enabled the music service in such a short time”, says Kenneth Tjønndal Pettersen, Communication Director of Canal Digital.

Aspiro yesterday published new survey results by research firm Norstat, showing that Scandinavian teenagers are ready to pay for a music streaming service, if only the service is good enough. Sweden is the Scandinavian country leading the development, closely followed by Norway and Denmark, somewhat behind its two neighbors. To contribute to a faster development in Denmark, Aspiro will offer free WiMP to all Danish users this summer.
