WYG Young employee of the year awards
Global multi-disciplinary consultancy WYG is celebrating the skills and commitment of two employees as they announce the winners of the inaugural WYG Young Planner and Young Environmentalist of the Year awards.
Throughout the year, young employees have continued to deliver innovation and excellence on some high-profile and important projects and the business is keen to celebrate individual achievement through the awards.
We are therefore pleased to announce Chris Palmer as our Young Planner of the Year and Graham Davis as Young Environmentalist of the Year for 2012.
Chris is a town planner working in the Cardiff office and over the last fifteen months he has been working on the contract for National Grid (NG), one of our key clients.
Employed as a Planning Consents Officer, Chris has been at the coalface of the public consultation relating to very contentious proposals by NG to provide a new high voltage electricity transmission network through Mid Wales to Shropshire. He has had to deal with a wide range of public responses (written and face to face at public meetings) ranging from downright intimidation to highly technical arguments put forward by specialists.
He has also proved to be a valuable member of the NG team preparing the development consent application to be submitted to the National Infrastructure Directorate next year.
As a direct result of the excellent service that Chris has given, NG opportunities have arisen for more of WYG’s planning staff to be employed as Consents Officers in respect of other NG major infrastructure projects deepening the relationship with this important WYG client.
Graham is a Graduate Environmental Scientist working out of the Leicester office. In his first year at WYG, he has proved to be a very valuable and profitable team member taking on a range of responsibilities and showing enthusiasm and capability on managing numerous projects but particularly with noise modelling. With the introduction of the National Planning Policy Framework in February, the NALO (Noise, Air, Light and Odour) team were faced with a new requirement to assess tranquillity. Graham devised a solution by creating national tranquillity maps based on Council for the Protection of Rural England work that directly feed into our noise models. This innovative solution now feeds into every WYG noise report and as far as we are aware, WYG are the only consultants to be pushing this new assessment forward.
The prize for Chris is an all expenses paid trip to London to attend the RTPI Annual Young Planners Conference. Graham’s prize will be for a similar all expenses paid trip to an environmental conference.
