Top industry specialists discussed effective content strategies needed for developing talent

David Mallon, head of research at Bersin by Deloitte, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and Michael Miller, Process and Standards Supervisor at Caterpillar, Inc., presented “Closing Skill Gaps at Caterpillar Starts with Content Strategy” to more than 400 attendees last Thursday.

“In a world of constant change, ‘Learning’ is crucial to organizational success,” said Mallon. “Despite learning’s high profile, our research shows that few training departments are seen as strategic by the business.  And, there is a definite skills shortage that will affect many businesses. This webinar gave attendees an opportunity to learn directly from a company that is overcoming these workforce challenges to become a High-Impact Learning Organization – one that through its learning strategies drives consistent and verifiable business results.”

Much attendee feedback indicated the webinar to be “very informative,” allowing the audience inside Caterpillar strategy meetings to both see and hear how Caterpillar is helping its dealer workforce improve their competence and ongoing skill development process.  One attendee commented, "The presentation blew me away. I even shared the event with numerous coworkers and my boss."

More specifically, attendees learned:

  • Bersin’s criteria to becoming a High Impact Learning Organization;
  • That Caterpillar creates bite-sized learning that can be searched and reused for maximum effectiveness;
  • The importance of the learner being involved in their own learning experience;
  • How delivering personalized learning at Caterpillar is helping close skill gaps by focusing on the individual user's needs.
