International housing network event taking place in York

Leaders in social housing policy and planning are gathering in York this week, as York Housing Association, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Capita Property and Infrastructure host international experts to discuss the common housing challenges being faced across Europe.

The Housing Network Event is organised by the International Federation for Housing Planning (IFHP), which is looking at how York, as a contemporary mid-sized city, deals with its own housing challenges, and how lessons learned in the city could help others.  The two and a half day workshop features experts who contribute to IFHP’s pan-European expertise, providing a forum for debate, exchange and identifying the most pressing housing needs.

“It is a great privilege to be hosting this event for such influential people in the housing sector,” comments Julia Histon, chief executive of York Housing Association.  “Within York, there are examples of both great practice and challenges being faced by housing providers nationally and internationally, so we are looking to visiting projects such as Derwenthorpe during the event.”

The meeting will address the European housing challenges from different angles and contexts to identify common and diverse housing needs, examining demographics such as ageing populations and migration flows, the role of the private sector in the provision or affordable housing, and high-level measures that can be proposed to respond to the lack of housing supply – an issue being faced across Europe.
