A crafty way to prepare for Christmas at York Minster

With the rise in popularity of crafting as a way of making your home more attractive, the experts of York Minster’s flower arranging and embroidery teams are sharing their skills in two workshops to prepare for Christmas.

On Saturday 6 December, the York Minster Broderers will enjoy the surroundings of the Chapter House for a special Christmas Embroidery Workshop, in which participants will create their own personal Christmas decoration under the expert tutelage of these master stitchers!  The three hour workshop runs from 10.00am to 1.00pm, with all materials provided, and is suitable for beginners and experienced embroiderers alike.

The following Saturday (13 December), fabric and threads will make way for foliage and oasis when the Minster Flower Arrangers lead a workshop to create Christmas wreaths.  Having honed their skills on hundreds of arrangements around the cathedral, as well as the enormous Advent Wreath that hangs each year beneath the Central Tower, these Christmas wreaths can be adapted as door hangings or as table centrepieces.

“Learning a new crafting skill can be quite a challenge, so these two workshops are perfect introductory sessions, where participants will leave with their very own piece of handiwork to display over the festive season,” comments Learning Manager, Kate Whitworth.  “Join us in the beautiful environment of the Chapter House, and all the materials and expert tuition are provided, along with some delicious seasonal refreshments.  A wonderful way to prepare for the festive season!”

Each workshops costs £20.00 including all materials and refreshments.  Places must be pre-booked by calling 01904 557208 or online at www.yorkminster.org

Younger visitors will not miss out on the crafting sessions, as on Saturday 20 December the Minster Learning Team will lead a session to create peg doll angels and Christmas crowns in drop in sessions running from 10.00am to 3.00pm.  Suitable for visitors aged five and over (children must be accompanied by an adult), the workshops cost just £2.50.  Usual admission charges apply, children admitted free with a paying adult and free admission for York Residents with a valid York Card.

Alongside the children’s crafting activities, younger visitors can also take advantage of free festive children’s trails or pick up Little Explorer Backpacks, filled with activities and equipment to make the most of a visit to York Minster.  Trails and backpacks are available during normal opening hours.
