Saturday 5 July 2014

As excitement and anticipation for the Tour de France Grand Depart continues to build across Yorkshire, a special twilight event at York Minster on Saturday 5 July 2014, will offer stillness, calm, a cup of tea and an opportunity to learn about the Minster’s French connections, all set to the gentle grand piano.

The Minster will stay open until 9pm (last admission at 8pm) for an evening of “Twilight, Tea and Tranquility”.  Visitors can enjoy lantern-lit trips up the Tower with magnificent sunset views across York as the city prepares for the Grand Depart.  Guides stationed at key positions around the Minster will describe some of the building’s ancient links with France. These include:

  • The West Window – known as the “Heart of Yorkshire” dating from c.1338 and one of the finest examples of French window tracery
  • The French Air Memorial in the North Transept commemorating the French airmen based in Yorkshire during World War Two
  • The large crucifixion window in the East End which was taken out of Rouen after the French Revolution
  • The Quire Screen depicting the Norman and Plantagenet kings who came from France and who went on to forge a separate and distinctive English identity.

Canon Chris Collingwood will be on hand to lead periods of guided silent meditation for those seeking stillness and peace - reflecting the still centre at the hub of the turning wheel - during one of the busiest periods in the recent history of the city and Yorkshire. A pop-up café set will serve a range of refreshments including calming Yorkshire Tea.

Twilight, Tea and Tranquility will be at York Minster on Saturday 5 July from 6-9pm (last admissions to the Minster will be at 8pm).  Entry to the Minster will cost £5 for adults, £2.50 for children (no concessions including York residents).  Tours of the Tower will cost £10.00 in addition to Minster Entry.
