Calling all budding flower arrangers – Countryside Live needs you!
Countryside Live, the rural showcase, which takes place in Harrogate next month, is hoping to encourage more people to take up flower arranging. Organisers will be equipping visitors with cut flowers and foliage to enable them to ‘have-a-go’ at what will be the 12th show.
Countryside Live, organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, takes place at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October. Around 12,000 visitors are expected to flock to the event when as well as competitive classes for cattle, sheep, horses, pigeons and poultry, the Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Show will feature.
Members of Knaresborough Horticultural Society, who run the classes as their Autumn Show, want to encourage visitors to roll their sleeves up and get creative.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone who has always wanted to try their hand at flower arranging to give it a go. We will provide them with some cut flowers and foliage and then it’s over to them,” said Mike Prest, of Knaresborough Horticultural Society. “In addition, our members will be on hand offering tips and advice on all things horticultural,” he said.
Elsewhere, Mr Prest expects competition in the chrysanthemum classes to be fierce and entries in the National Vegetable Society sections to be high. Other attractions include displays from school gardening club members, and cookery and handicraft classes.
“Countryside Live is a great show for vegetable growers,” he said. “A lot of the vegetable shows are over by early October so Countryside Live comes at just the right time and the entries we get are invariably of a very high standard.”
New for Countryside Live this year are pony rides as well as demonstrations by members of the Savage Skills freestyle mountain bike stunt team. Back by popular demand is Diggerland and the fun One Man and His Pig competition, while visitors will be able to have-a-go at archery and willow-weaving, felt-making and straw craft.
Anyone wanting to enter any of the Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Show classes at Countryside Live needs to do so by Thursday 16 October. Information is on the Knaresborough Horticultural Society website (www.khsyorkshire.org.uk).
Tickets can be bought in advance (until 12noon Thursday 16 October) and cost £9 for adults and £5 for children with a family ticket, admitting two adults and three children, priced at £24. Full price tickets will be available on the gate. Parking is free and extensive.
Dogs, other than assistance dogs, are not allowed on the showground. Please be kind to your dog and leave it at home.
