AHLSTROM-MUNKSJÖ OYJ, PRESS RELEASE January 23, 2020 at 15:45 p.m. EET

Ahlstrom-Munksjö has joined the Sustainable European Abrasive Manufacturers (SEAM) program, a new initiative to improve sustainability of the abrasive industry.

SEAM was launched on January 21, 2020 by the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives (FEPA), which represents over 80% of the abrasive product producers in Europe.

The objective of the program is to support and assist abrasive manufacturers in their efforts to achieve sustainable growth and improvements in sustainability, primarily in production and distribution. The program wants to have all players in the supply chain contributing to the European sustainability system.

To be admitted into the program, the European plants of Ahlstrom-Munksjö had to meet a series of minimum requirements organized into the three fundamental pillars of sustainability: environment, labor and economy.

“By joining the SEAM program, we are confirming our support to coated and bonded abrasives manufacturers that wish to commit to a more sustainable future,” says Nikita Mulard, Vice President of Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s Abrasive business.

As part of the program, Ahlstrom-Munksjö can use the SEAM label. The company will also adopt or refine existing targets within the three pillars, such as energy management, employee safety and business continuity and work on improving performance, reporting annually on progress.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö has already contributed to making the abrasive products value chain more sustainable. All abrasive backings produced by Ahlstrom-Munksjö have been formaldehyde-free since 2015 and a range of innovative fiber-based products have been launched to provide more sustainable alternatives to traditional abrasive backings.
