Mrs Evelyn Foster, a resident of Bupa’s The Crest Residential Home, Rutland Drive, Harrogate, is looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday on Thursday 24 December. The home will be holding a party on Wednesday 23 December at 2.30pm, and the Lady Mayor, Councillor Pat Jones will be in attendance. Evelyn was born in 1909 in Burley in Wharfedale, where she lived with her parents and four older sisters. Her father worked in the local mill and Evelyn took up a position here after leaving school. Evelyn worked at the mill for most of her working life, eventually being promoted to Overseer. Evelyn and her husband enjoyed travelling, and due to his job with British Rail got to travel the world, eventually retiring to Filey. Their hobbies included walking and the outdoors and she loved to play the piano. The Girl Guides played an important role in Evelyn’s life and she had the honour of meeting Lady Baden-Powell, wife of Lord Baden-Powell, who founded the Scouting movement. Evelyn has only been a resident at The Crest for a short period of time, but is already taking an active role in the home and regularly plays soft ball with the other residents and enjoys reciting poetry. Andrea Pearson, home manager of Bupa’s The Crest Residential Home, said: “We are pleased to be celebrating this special occasion with Evelyn. She is really looking forward to her party and we hope she enjoys meeting the Lady Mayor.”
