Bupa’s The Gables Specialist Nursing Centre, Eastrea, Whittlesey, Peterborough, is celebrating after receiving the prestigious Palliative Care Award at the Nursing in Practice Awards at the NEC Birmingham. The award recognises the expertise, professionalism, sensitivity and personalised care that the team at the home give to those residents approaching the end of their life, and rewards them for their hard work. Bupa’s The Gables Specialist Nursing Centre were required to submit a project which demonstrated their expertise in palliative care, and which had been implemented for at least the last 18 months. The strategy implemented by the home included evaluating processes used to identify when a resident with dementia is nearing the end of life ensuring that the person’s needs are assessed and a holistic and person-centred care pathway is followed. The project was reviewed by a panel of judges and the home became one of two finalists, finally being chosen as the winner due to the project’s ability to be reproduced easily across a number of disciplines and the positive results implementing this strategy has produced. Dawn Harbour, home manager at Bupa’s The Gables Specialist Nursing Centre, said: “We are overjoyed at winning this prestigious award, it really highlights to everyone the hard work and determination we have put into implementing this strategy. I would like to thank the whole team for their efforts and for the high standard of care and support they continue to give our residents.”
