Leisure Industry Week Scores Stuart Pearce as Latest Keynote Speaker
The Leisure Industry Week Keynote Theatre programme has reached an Olympic new height with the announcement that former Team GB London 2012 manager, Stuart Pearce will be joining the line-up. With a multiplicity of experience building teams that go the distance, Pearce’s presentation is a must attend session for any attendee wanting to gain first hand insight into effective management.
From 2007 to 2013 Pearce managed England’s national Under-21s football team. He transformed talented young players into professional athletes with their sights on Premier League success. When it comes to getting the absolute most out of each and every player, Pearce is a team management deity.
LIW CEO Nick Orton said, “We’re delighted to welcome Stuart to the Keynote Theatre – a team manager who embodies the one team philosophy that the new face of LIW is all about. This is a fantastic coup and is going to be an unmissable highlight of the show.”
In 2012 Pearce went on to achieve what many consider as the pinnacle of football managerial success. He was asked by the FA to take on the position of team manager for the Great Britain Olympic football team at the 2012 London Summer Games, a role that he accepted with distinction. Putting together the dream team was no easy feat. It took Pearce no less than seven months to contact 191 players, then create a shortlist of just 35. From here he developed a bespoke management plan that encompassed strategy, team building and trust. Pearce will undoubtedly explore the experience in further detail as part of his keynote speaker presentation.
As a former football player, Pearce not only has an in-depth understanding of how to manage teams, but also how to be managed. Throughout his career he appeared for a variety of clubs, including Wealdstone, Coventry City, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Manchester City. His spell at Nottingham Forest won him international recognition, where he regularly captained the team and went on to be crowned the club’s most capped International.
While Pearce has enjoyed his fair share of glory it hasn’t always been an easy ride. In February 2015 he lost his position as Nottingham Forest FC manager when owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi decided he was the problem rather than the solution. In the wake of the dismissal Pearce endured a plethora of media attention. In a display of paramount professionalism Pearce took it in his stride and turned a negative situation into a meaningful learning experience. No doubt the incident will feature in his keynote presentation as an inspirational example of how success has both its dizzying highs and its plummeting lows.
Pearce will appear on the Keynote Theatre stage from 14:00-15:00 on Wednesday September 22. He said, “I’m really looking forward to taking to the stage at LIW in September, and hopefully inspire the next generation of footballers, managers and athletes.”
For attendees, the attraction of the LIW keynote speaker programme is definitive. The Keynote Theatre offers delegates the chance to learn from the crème de la crème of industry professionals, as well as engage in dynamic Q&A sessions, live debates, round table discussions and more. All attendees are categorically welcome, whether they experience the industry as a personal trainer or a CEO.
