Summer has finally arrived at The Old Cellar!

Well, summer is now in full swing, the longest day has been and gone, BBQ’s are on the menu and of course it wouldn’t be a classic British summer without the occasional downpour of rain!

Here at Cellar Wines we are very keen to match our wine choices to the season so here are our top picks for summer –

Crisp and Dry Whites –

One of the new wines to come in recently which has proved an immediate success with our customers, is the Res Fortes Blanc 2014 (£14.00) which is an intriguing mix of Macabeu, Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris made by an exceptionally talented young winemaker in the Roussillon area of Southern France. It is dry and beautifully balanced and one of those wines where one sip leaves you wanting more! On a more traditional note we also have just listed a premium Sancerre Pascal Jolivet ‘Les Cailottes’ Sancerre Blanc 2015 (£25.00). In our opinion this is Sancerre at its finest, it is incredibly elegant, crisp and refined without that sharpness often found in lesser quality wines from this region. When made well by a top producer like this, the Sauvignon Blanc is rarely grown better anywhere in the world and this is a difficult wine to beat on a hot summers’ day.

Rosé –

Rose tends to be the summer favourite however it is a style of wine which we think can actually be enjoyed with the right foods all year round. Our absolute favourite this summer is produced very locally to us; Silent Pool Rosé 2015 (£18.50), it is made at the Albury estate just down the road from us in Shere. It is without a doubt, in our opinion the best English still Rosé that we have ever tried, it is made from the Pinot Noir grape and has subtle hints of strawberries, it is a dry wine and only 10.5% alcohol. Extremely refreshing on a hot day and was actually served on the Royal barge at the Queens jubilee a few years ago in its first vintage! If it’s good enough for her Majesty then it works for us! There is only a very small amount produced each year and we don’t have a great deal left in stock so be sure to pay us a visit soon where we have it open to serve by the glass in the boutique, and if you ask very nicely we could always let you have a little taster before you buy!

Reds –

The Gamay’s from the Beaujolais region and the Cabernet Franc’s from the Loire Valley are always a popular choice in the summertime, they can be drunk slightly chilled and pair very nicely with salads on a warm summers evening. With BBQ’s however we do like a red with a little more body to pair with the steaks and sausages etc. We think we have found a little gem of an Argentinian Malbec in the Triuno Malbec 2014 (£12.50) made from a relatively small producer in the Mendoza region of Argentina. It is nice and soft and not overly tannic so is a perfect match for sharing whilst enjoying a BBQ

Fizz –

The rise in popularity of Prosecco seems unabated but we find that there are many generic Prosecco’s out there which don’t really offer much in terms of taste and flavour which is why we were delighted to discover the Bortolomiol Prosecco 2014 (£14.70) earlier this year. This is a more serious vintage Prosecco which is more than a match for the lower end Champagnes, it is lovely dry and fresh but has more flavour and complexity than most other Prosecco’s out there on the market. We are also pleased announce that we now stock the High Clandon Celebration Cuveé Special Reserve Vintage 2010 (£45.00) made just down the road in High Clandon. There is a very small production of 2000 bottles released every year of this exceptional English Sparkling wine. It has been left for 6 years on its lees and has a lot more body and roundness compared to many other English Sparkling wines. This is a fine example of how good English fizz can be, and is a serious match for any Champagne at the same price. Again this is something that we have very limited stocks of.

Hopefully the weather will be kind to us over the coming months so that we can enjoy all these fine wines to their maximum potential!
