TÖNNJES to present new license plate authentication solution with SICPA at ID4Africa 2026
New cooperation brings SICPA’s OPALINE® technology into TÖNNJES’ secure vehicle identification portfolio.
Delmenhorst, Germany, May 12th, 2026 TÖNNJES International Group will exhibit at ID4Africa 2026 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, presenting a new cooperation with SICPA. Together, the companies are introducing OPALINE®, an optical mid and long-range authentication solution, to TÖNNJES’ portfolio for secure license plates.
The technology enables authorities to verify the authenticity of vehicle license plates from a distance. OPALINE® combines colour-shifting and polarisation effects that can be checked by the naked eye, with simple validation tools or via camera systems. Integrated into Automated Number Plate Recognition-systems, the solution supports secure and efficient authentication in traffic enforcement, tolling, parking and border- or access-control.

Fake and tampered license plates remain a growing challenge for governments, operators and law enforcement agencies. They can enable toll and tax evasion, insurance fraud, unauthorized access and other forms of vehicle-related crime. The new solution helps address these risks by making license plates easier to authenticate, while remaining compatible with existing security features and smart mobility systems.
