Cologne – February 2023. MOTUL is now using its high level of expertise in the vehicle care and lubricant sector to enter the bicycle market for the first time with eight new consumer products. The top-quality products score highly in a total of four functional areas – degreasing, cleaning, lubrication, and puncture protection – thanks to their partly unique properties. For example, two different chain lubricants use innovative ester technology, originally developed for motor sports, to guarantee exceptionally long-lasting lubrication with a particularly stable molecular structure. In addition, all products are biodegradable and do not contain any environmentally harmful aerosols or labelled hazardous substances. The user-friendly plastic bottles and atomisers are made from recycled materials and are also fully recyclable after use.

For decades, MOTUL lubricants and vehicle care products have been regarded as the ultimate, not only by the world’s most successful motorsport teams, but also in the workshop sector and by discerning car and motorbike owners. In short, MOTUL products stand for high performance and reliability even under extreme conditions. The company has repeatedly set new industry benchmarks with its many innovations, such as the development of the first semi-synthetic and later also fully synthetic engine oils. MOTUL is now starting a new chapter with the market launch of its bicycle care products, focusing on the topics of sustainability and environmental compatibility.

“Our new bicycle care products are the logical consequence of 170 years of work in the car and motorbike sector. Outstanding customer feedback and positive experiences with our motorbike care products have now inspired us to develop products for the bicycle sector,” says Mark Grunert, Head of Marketing at MOTUL Germany.

Always being one step ahead of the competition is already in MOTUL’s DNA. “With our chain lubricants, for example, we rely on a variation of the innovative ester technology used in our engine oils. But the extra effort in production certainly pays off later on. Lubricants with ester technology retain their excellent lubricating properties even after a long period of use and provide optimal protection, especially for the hardest-working components such as gears, chains, or sprockets. This means they surpass the performance of existing chain lubricants, such as those which use PTFE. All bicycles are ideally protected against wear with these new products, no matter whether it’s a road bike, mountain bike, or even an e-bike,” continues Grunert.

Focus on Sustainability and User-Friendliness

In addition to a high utility value, the sustainability of the products was particularly important to MOTUL engineers during development. “When it comes to user-friendliness and performance, we make no compromises with our bicycle products either. But we have gone one step further. As one of the world’s largest producers of lubricant and vehicle care products, we take our responsibility for the environment very seriously. Recyclable packaging, the absence of propellants in spray products, and the biodegradability of the fluids and greases used were the main focus for our bicycle products from the very beginning,” says Armin Bolch, Managing Director of MOTUL Germany.

All eight products – two cleaning and degreasing sprays each, two chain lubricants, a multipurpose oil for the drive, bearings, and Bowden cables, and a tubeless sealant – will be available from 10 March 2023. In the professional sector, the MOTUL BioClean washbasin, designed for environmentally friendly and biodegradable parts cleaning in the workshop, complements the range. The product launch is accompanied and supported by an extensive marketing and PR campaign, collaborations with influencers and top athletes, as well as various PoS advertising media. MOTUL’s bicycle care range will celebrate its public premiere at Cycling World Europe. The event agenda also includes the 3RIDES Festival in Aachen and the Dirt Masters Festival in Winterberg.

“If the MOTUL name is on the bottle, then you know high performance is guaranteed,” says Jan Müller, Product Manager. “MOTUL has long been a legendary name in motorsport. We are all the more pleased that the bicycle world can now finally benefit from MOTUL’s quality and innovative power. The product range covers the most common usage areas very well. And the price-performance ratio is excellent. Particularly noteworthy is the consistently sustainable approach that MOTUL pursues both with its products for end consumers and with regard to solutions for bicycle repair shops," Müller concludes.
