Sustainable, economical, efficient: MOTUL introduces new refillable cleaning and multipurpose sprays

Cologne, Germany – 09. March 2023: With the MOTUL Refill System, French lubricant manufacturer MOTUL is launching completely refillable cleaning and multipurpose sprays for the most common workshop applications. The MOTUL refill products are designed to replace the three most commonly used disposable sprays in the automotive and motorbike workshop sector: brake cleaner, surface cleaner, and a multipurpose oil. The system not only reduces waste disposal, but also saves space and costs. At the same time, these products are VOC-reduced (reduction of volatile solvents) and protect the health of workers by completely eliminating harmful propellants and aerosols.

Spray cans containing brake cleaner, cold cleaner, or the ever-popular penetrating oil certainly play a vital role in everyday workshop life. Though these products may seem practical at first glance, they are actually harmful to not only the environment but also to the health of workers due to their formulation. The spray which shoots out of the nozzle consists, at least in the case of cleaners, of highly volatile chemicals such as petroleum, isopropanol and acetone. These solvents are also highly flammable and are difficult to store and dispose of.

In addition, the propellants used in these sprays, which often make up well over half of the total contents of the can, are harmful to the environment and can potentially explode. This means that it is not uncommon for only 40 percent of the contents to be the actual cleaning agent – the rest of the can is simply filled with the propellant gas.

These chemicals often attack surfaces and seals and can leave the workplace smelling like a chemical plant for a while after use. Moreover, the fast-evaporating components only dissolve the dirt while they are liquid, i.e. for only a few seconds.

Compressed air from a workshop compressor replaces the highly explosive propellant gas

“With our MOTUL Refill System, we are showing that things can be done differently. Safer. Cleaner. Better. And in a more economical way overall. MOTUL Refill offers the three most important chemical-technical products used in workshops and maintenance – two solvent-free cleaners and a VOC-reduced penetrating oil. With the refillable spray cans, we are completely avoiding propellants and are instead using a resource that is available in almost unlimited quantities in workshops: compressed air straight from the compressor,” says Thorsten Wiegand, MOTUL’s Key Account Manager Chemicals.

All MOTUL Refill bottles can be easily and repeatedly ‘topped up’ using compressed air as a propellant. A pressure relief valve in the bottle stops the pressure from becoming too high. The stable spray bottles can be refilled on a virtually unlimited basis with the three environmentally and health-friendly refill products.

For example, a label-free brake cleaner with reduced highly volatile components can wash off abrasion and grinding dust, insect dirt, soot, oils, and release agents from engines and other vehicle parts.

A label-free surface cleaner and degreaser, which leaves very little residue despite its strong cleaning power, is also available for the reliable removal of grease, fingerprints, adhesive and glue residues, as well as oils.

The third refill product is a multipurpose spray for lubricating, protecting, and cleaning. The universally applicable spray forms a reliable corrosion protection film and is free of acids, silicone and Teflon. In addition, the fluids have a pleasant scent of vanilla, menthol, and baby shampoo.

Cheaper overall than disposable sprays

On top of its many product advantages, MOTUL Refill also scores points in terms of economy. After all, the costs of the can and the propellant are eliminated with every refill with this system. In contrast to conventional disposable sprays, the contents of which sometimes consist of more than half propellant, the refill bottles are filled with around 80 percent cleaning fluid or oil. This means that only about 20 percent of the bottle’s content consists of compressed air once refilled. “You only pay for the contents of the can. And even in relation to pump sprayers, our system is highly attractive in terms of price and is particularly user-friendly due to its better efficiency and longevity,” Wiegand continues.

Since the bottles can always be reused, there is significantly less waste disposal and storage needed, which results in fewer costs. The operational environmental and hazard management is considerably relieved as the refill products do not contain any explosive propellants.

For particularly precise application, all refill cans are equipped with an adjustable and sturdy metal nozzle for precise spraying in hard-to-reach places, for example. Of course, a conventional nozzle can also be used to spray over a wider area.

In any case, the application and refill are both incredibly easy and products can be used quickly and safely by any workshop employee. “As a reliable workshop partner, the issue of sustainability is particularly close to our hearts. The MOTUL Refill fits perfectly into our overall environmental management concept, the Green Roof, and on the product side complements the BioClean washbasin system, first presented in 2021, in which microorganisms dissolve grease, oil particles and other substances to a large extent in an environmentally friendly manner,” Wiegand concludes. All three products from the new MOTUL Refill System will be available in Germany from the first quarter of 2023.
