The world’s most recognized environmental award for beaches and marinas, Blue Flag, is awarded to 56 beaches and 3 marinas in Israel because of their high standards within water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety.

Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognized voluntary awards for beaches, marinas, and sustainable tourism boats and in order to qualify, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained. This year, 56 beaches and 3 marinas in Israel have been awarded with the iconic award – from Galei Galil in the North to Hashchafim in the South. In addition to all bathing beaches in Tel Aviv being Blue Flag certified, all plastic and single-use items have been forbidden in order to keep them clean.

The Blue Flag is a part of The Blue Flag Programme for beaches, marinas and tourism boats, and is run by the international, nongovernmental, non-profit organization FEE (the Foundation for Environmental Education). The now global program started in France in 1985 and promotes sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas. It challenges local authorities and beach operators to achieve high standards in the four categories of water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety. Currently, 5066 beaches, marinas and tourism boats in 50 countries carry the award, in collaboration with its coastal municipalities.

A selection of Blue Flag beaches in Israel:

  • Hilton Beach is located in central Tel Aviv, in front of the Hilton hotel and is considered Tel Aviv’s unofficial gay beach. In Hilton Beach, you can take part in adventurous watersports such as surfing and paddle boarding. The southern part of the beach is considered the number one spot in Tel Aviv for surfers, while the northern area is completely dog-friendly.
  • Gordon Beach is located near the Tel Aviv Marina and is one of Tel Aviv’s busiest beaches. For those who love being active, this place is a must with volleyball courts, a seawater swimming pool overlooking the sea, workout equipment, and more. The area also offers several bars, ideal for watching the sunset.
  • Mezizim Beach is considered an iconic place to many Israelis. It is named after its appearance in a monumental 1970’s film with the same name, “Metsitsim.” The spot is family-friendly and conveniently close to the Tel Aviv Port. Besides beautiful views and white sands, visitors can find volleyball courts, outdoor workout equipment, and a children’s playground.
