Sibelius Academy of University of the Arts Helsinki in Finland will introduce video applications during the spring 2014 student admission process. During the pilot phase, applicants for the 2.5-year master's degree programme of oboe, bassoon, and trumpet will submit their applications as video recordings.

The video application is intended to encourage international applicants to apply for the free-of-charge university degree music studies at the Sibelius Academy.

- To take part in an entrance examination in Finland is a financial and organizational challenge for international applicants. By introducing the video application process we want to lower the threshold for talented applicants from even more remote countries, says Kaarlo Hildén, Dean of the Faculty of Classical Music at the Sibelius Academy.

The video application option replaces the traditional entrance examination. Applicants will arrange their recordings according to provided instructions and send them via the global MUSICCAS Music Complete Audition Services to Sibelius Academy by 25 April 2014. The selection board will view the videos using the same system. The experiment will be assessed during the spring.

- We need to work globally to maintain the very high educational standards also in small instrument groups such as oboe, bassoon, and trumpet. This is important for the future of orchestral music training, says Sibelius Academy's wind instrument, harp and percussion department head Petri Alanko.

The Sibelius Academy will also use the MUSICCAS system for the international GLOMAS folk music education application process. Applicants will submit video recordings of pre-examination assignments which will decide if they are invited to the entrance examination.
