Leading flooring company Kährs announces that it has achieved Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), meeting the latest standard, EN 15804:2012+A2:2019, on a large part of its wood flooring portfolio. The EPDs are third-party verified and are a very helpful tool for Kährs customers to make informed decisions when selecting floors for sustainable projects. The EPD shows that all wooden floors in the scope are climate positive cradle to gate.

EPDs are increasingly important for construction companies and architects when selecting material and doing CO2 calculations for sustainable buildings. EPDs are an externally verified and standardized description of the environmental profile of any product or material over its lifetime, based on standards. Kährs new EPD is valid for all wood flooring produced at the company’s site in Nybro, Sweden, being one of the first in the flooring industry to support the latest standard - EN 15804:2012+A2:2019. The new standard is more in depth than the previous one. For instance, the declaration of end-of-life is now mandatory and more extensive than before.

The construction sector is today responsible for 50% of the global resource consumption and 39% of the global carbon emissions*1. Forecasts says that the global building stock will be doubled by 2060*2. Those figures show the importance of always striving towards minimizing the environmental impact of each new building.

Wood is a renewable, sustainable, carbon neutral material to use in buildings and has the capability to store carbon dioxide. The result of the EPD shows that all wooden floors in the given scope are climate positive looking at the lifecycle Cradle to Gate.

“This is a big step in our ambition to be transparent with our climate impact. The EPDs are of great importance to many of our customers in the construction industry since it gives a complete view of the climate impact of our products. This is especially important when constructing new sustainable buildings,” says Charlotta Persfell, Chief Marketing Officer, Kährs.

The EPD has been produced with Building Information Foundation RTS sr/Building Information Ltd as program operator and the One Click LCA as software. Kährs’ product specific EPDs are published on kahrsflooring.com here.
