Leadership on the environment’s terms

Kiilto's Promise to the Environment is reflected in its decision-making and processes for developing new products in the construction business.

Kiilto’s ambitious environmental objectives are integrated with its management and decision-making. Miikka Haapa-aho, Construction Business Area Director at Kiilto, says that environmental considerations are embedded in Kiilto’s product development processes.

"The starting point is our approach of checking the environmental benefits of each new solution or service," he says.

Kiilto’s Promise to the Environment is, above all, a mindset for Kiilto employees.

"As a topic which employees even discuss over coffee, it forms a natural part of our business," Miikka points out.

Miikka explains that the environmental viewpoint also forms part of customer work and customer training.

"When talking to customers, we run through how our products and packaging take account of the environment, and the other things Kiilto does to reduce their environmental impact," he says.

Towards greener solutions

In addition to customer training and communications, Kiilto has highlighted the prevention of construction waste. For example, it has launched a pumpable screed business, based on a concept originating in Sweden. The aim is to improve construction efficiency and reduce the amount of waste generated.

"The business enables us to transport just the required amount of screed material to construction sites. This avoids the need to open large bags that might be exposed to rain and create waste at the site. We now bring a vehicle carrying a suitable quantity of screed. Only the required amount is used at the site, and the rest can be kept for the next construction site," Miikka says.

Johan Engwall, Managing Director of Kiilto Ab, says that the pumpable screed business brings efficient use of resources as well as major environmental benefits.

"Suitable pumping trucks can supply up to 38 tonnes of self-levelling material per set of vehicles, and pump up to 20 tonnes per hour. This enables us to spread a large amount of screed in a short period," Johan says.

He points out that fast pumping of screed also allows the customers using it to reduce their construction times. And since trucks that pump screed eliminate the need for product packaging, significantly less waste is generated."Our biggest customers are large construction companies with very high environmental standards. This contract work model ensures that we can meet the highest environmental standards in terms of our services and product features," Johan sums up.
