£25,000 pledged and over 30 entrants enquiring for next year’s race

Southampton-based international seafaring charity, the Sailors’ Society, has thanked their recent London Marathon runners for pledging a record £25,000. The charity has since received more than 30 enquiries regarding entry into the 2010 event and believes it can exceed this year’s donations.

The Sailors’ Society had 22 runners who completed the 2009 London Marathon, including marine industry worker Tom Netzal, who flew in from his home in San Francisco, and Londoner David Crane who was running for the charity for the very first time.

Sailors’ Society Event Fundraiser, Felicity Patterson, who was part of the charity cheer squad in London, said: “We are quite overwhelmed by the support our runners received this year.

“Within 4 days of the marathon our offices received 30 enquiries from runners interested in supporting us next year; five came in within the first hour on the Monday morning. It is quite astonishing; we are really grateful for the support and thank all of our 2009 runners not only their dedication to training and fundraising, but also for representing the charity in such a way that even more people now want to support us!”

Soon after crossing the finishing line David Crane said: “This has truly been one of the best experiences of my life. I thank the Sailors’ Society for giving me the opportunity to run and raise money for such a good cause. I’m glad I was able to exceed my target and hope my contribution helps support seafarers in need all over the world.”

Felicity added: “We also have places available for the Great North Run, Great South Run and the adidas Women’s 5K Challenge and welcome enquiries from anyone who would like to take part.”
