Ronald M. Beare appointed managing director of Botnia S.A. in Uruguay

Ronald M. Beare (41) has been appointed Managing Director of Oy Metsä-Botnia
Ab's Uruguayan subsidiary Botnia S.A. with effect from 7 January 2005. Mr Beare
is joining Botnia from the Chilean company Celulosa Arauco, where he held the
post of Vice President, Sales and Marketing. 

Mr Beare has extensive managerial experience in the forest industry, having
worked for several forest products companies in Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.
He has also been a member of the boards of the Argentina Pulp and Paper
Association and the Brazilian Pulp Exporters Association. 

Registered in Uruguay, Botnia S.A. was founded in 2004 to implement a planned
pulp mill project in Uruguay. Once the project has been completed, Botnia S.A.
intends to begin pulp production and related activities in Uruguay. The planned
mill will have an annual capacity of one million tonnes. The cost of the
investment is around USD 1.1 billion. 

Botnia has been granted free trade zone status in Uruguay in October 2004. An
application for an environmental permit is in its final stages and a decision
is expected early in 2005. A final decision for the project is expected in the
first quarter of 2005.
