Metsä Tissue and BHM Engineering sign an agreement concerning the engineering services for the Mariestad mill expansion in Sweden
Metsä Tissue, part of Metsä Group, has chosen BHM Engineering as the design service partner for the new expansion of the mill in Mariestad in Sweden. BHM Engineering will provide detailed construction engineering services for the project, and it is planned to start the work in early 2021.
In May 2020, Metsä Tissue submitted an environmental permit application to the Land and Environment Court in Vänersborg concerning its plans to increase fresh fibre-based tissue paper production at its mill in Mariestad in Sweden. It is planned that the extension would increase the annual tissue paper production capacity by doubling it from the current 70,000 to 145,000 tonnes, starting fully in 2024. The project planning phase of the investment has now been completed, and next Metsä Tissue will gradually move to the implementation planning phase, starting with construction planning.
“This agreement is an important step forward in our strategic Future Mill programme. We’re pleased to assign BHM to the Mariestad project because of their good reputation and involvement in many projects in the paper and tissue industry over the last decade. We’re looking forward to their expertise and knowledge in this strategically important project,” says Esa Paavolainen, Vice President, Projects, Metsä Tissue.
BHM Engineering, located in Austria, has a proven track record in engineering mills and industrial sites, and they will be providing their services to Metsä Tissue throughout the project, starting in early 2021. BHM was also used as Metsä Tissue’s partner in the project’s conceptual design phase in 2020. “We’re proud that Metsä Tissue is giving BHM the opportunity to be part of this exciting project for the intended major expansion of its mill in Mariestad. We’re looking forward to continuing our excellent cooperation with Metsä Tissue,” says Peter Oksakowski, Managing Director, BHM INGENIEURE, Engineering & Consulting GmbH.
The commencement of the civil engineering process is a significant step forward in Metsä Tissue’s plans to expand the mill in Mariestad. The expansion of the mill would include the construction of a new paper machine, new converting lines, an automated warehouse and a new office building.
