RAISIO PLC RESEARCH FOUNDATION ENCOURAGES YOUNG RESEARCHERS TO GO FOR
QUALIFICATIONS
The Raisio plc Research Foundation awarded a total of EUR 180,350 in grants to
12 researchers or research groups this year. It also gave four recognition
awards of EUR 500 each for the best Master's theses in the field.
Says Ilmo Aronen, Product Development Director of the Feed & Malt Division and
representative of the Raisio plc Research Foundation: “The Foundation's goal is
to move the focus of its operations more and more towards graduate schools. The
latest funding decisions reflected this policy in the sense that all of the
grants went to doctoral research. When deciding on the grants, special attention
was given to the appropriateness of the research plan, as well as to the
postgraduate study plan and the statements supporting it.”
The grants were awarded for various research topics in different fields of the
food production chain. Short- and long-term effects of the consumption of
wholemeal products, Improvement of clubroot tolerance in oil plants and
Metabolic stress in dairy cows: development, indicators and prevention are only
a few examples of the topics. Around one-third of the grants were awarded for
food technology research, one-fourth for plant production research and the
remaining 40% for human and animal nutrition research.
“It is vital for the Finnish food industry to ensure its competence throughout
the business chain. Sufficient inputs in research contribute to this. This is
why the Raisio Research Foundation supports high-quality research and further
qualification of young researchers,” says Aronen.
This year, the Research Foundation's grants will be available for application
earlier than usual: at the end of September 2009.
The environment seminar arranged in Raisio on 15 April 2009 was attended by some
70 researchers and professionals. The Research Foundation's third thematic
seminar focused on ways to adapt to climate change and opportunities to reduce
the environmental impacts of food production. The seminar also assessed the role
that environmental affairs play in consumers' choices.
