Gotland’s biggest hotel becomes a Scandic

On 14 June Gotland’s biggest hotel – Visby HamnHotell – will become Scandic’s first hotel on the popular Swedish island. The comprehensive refurbishment and extension of the hotel has been completed and it is now time for a name change. The new Scandic Visby will be offering this summer’s guests 214 rooms, many with sea views and a balcony or terrace. The complex also includes conference facilities, two restaurants, a pool, an outdoor spa, a gym and an unbeatable location opposite the ferry terminal, just a few minutes from the medieval town centre.

As the Nordic region’s leading hotel chain, Scandic has so far not ventured onto Gotland, despite the island being a symbol of Scandinavian holiday dreams and a top-ranking tourist magnet. Gotland and Visby are also a popular meeting place for business leaders and politicians. Scandic has signed a franchise agreement with GotlandsResor, so on 14 June 2013 the hotel will change its name and join the Scandic family.

Full of potential
May 2013 is the completion date for the extensive refurbishment and extension of the popular hotel, which now offers 214 rooms with a total of 509 beds. Many of the rooms are family rooms and the future Scandic Visby also has 27 rooms for disabled guests.

Ahead of the final construction phase at the hotel, GotlandsResor investigated and assessed the various hotel chains in the market. Scandic was chosen based on the company’s values and its approach to sustainability and accessibility, as well as its brand awareness. GotlandsResor will continue to own and manage the hotel. Joining up with Scandic will not mean any personnel changes and the hotel manager, Jennie Hägerstrand, will remain in her post at the newly refurbished hotel.
