Ericsson launches Bluetooth education kit for schools

Ericsson launches Bluetooth education kit for schools Ericsson today launched the Bluetooth Application and Training Kit for schools and universities, which provides low cost, convenient hands-on training involving Bluetooth wireless technology. The tool kit has been developed by Ericsson and enables students in higher education to understand both the theory and applications of Bluetooth short-range radio communication. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group today has close to 2000 member companies, but there has also been a lot of interest around this groundbreaking technology from universities across the world. Ericsson is the first company to launch a kit developed specifically for universities, and it will be the cheapest development kit for Bluetooth applications. The kit will cost around USD 500 and will be distributed by Sigma Comtec, who will also handle support, which is included in the kit. Also part of the kit is the entire Bluetooth specification, as well as access to Ericsson's web-based learning program and extensive presentation material. Only educational institutions, not commercial companies, will be able to purchase the Bluetooth Application and Training Kit from Ericsson. The hardware consists of a circuit board, which can easily be connected to the host computer with a USB connection, which ensures ease of use and full Bluetooth data/voice transfer speed. A well-defined Application Program Interface (API) provides access to the different layers of the protocol stack. Ericsson has announced several Bluetooth products, making Ericsson the first company to have a product portfolio, which consists of both voice and data products. The following products have been presented up to date: Mobile Phones T36 and R520 - the first Bluetooth phones. Bluetooth PC Card DBP-10 - Enables wireless communication between your laptop and your Bluetooth mobile phone. Bluetooth Headset HBH-10 - lightweight hands-free headset that wirelessly communicates with your Bluetooth phone. Bluetooth Phone Adapter DBA-10 - used on the new generation Ericsson phones without built-in Bluetooth communication capabilities. Cordless Screen Phone HS210 - communications device for the home allowing Internet browsing, sending e-mails and making phone calls. Bluetooth Development Kit - a toolbox of equipment that provides a flexible design environment for engineers to integrate the Bluetooth wireless technology into a range of electronic devices. Bluetooth Application Tool kit - A hardware and software tool to speed up Bluetooth application development. The Bluetooth wireless technology is set to revolutionize the personal connectivity market by providing freedom from wired connections. It is a specification for a small-form factor, low-cost radio solution providing links between mobile computers, mobile phones and other portable handheld devices, and connectivity to the Internet. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), comprised of leaders in the telecommunications, computing, and network industries, is driving development of the technology and bringing it to market. The Bluetooth SIG includes promoter companies 3Com, Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Lucent, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia and Toshiba, and thousands of adopter companies.
