Wanja Lundby-Wedin re-elected president of the LO Our strength lies in our unity

On Sunday June 1st 2008, Wanja Lundby-Wedin was re-elected president of the LO for a third term.

Wanja Lundby-Wedin predicted that the next four years will be tough and outlined three strategies for success: - “The first is, of course, for us to have as many members as possible. The second is to have strong collective agreements. The third is to continue our cooperation with the Social Democrat Party to improve working conditions. All of this has to be done at local, national and international level.” - “I myself will do my utmost to ensure that the Swedish workers’ organisation continues to be the world’s strongest trade union movement”, she promised.


Wanja Lundby-Wedin was born in Stockholm in 1952. She is married and has two children and two grand-children. She began her career as assistant nurse at Högdalen hospital from where she went as assistant nurse to Danderyd hospital. She then became a trade union representative at the Stockholm branch of the Municipal Workers’ Union. In 1994, Wanja Lundby-Wedin was elected vice-president of the LO and in 2000 became the LO’s first female president.

Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO) organises 15 unions with a union density of 76 percent of the blue collar workers. Wanja Lundby-Wedin is president of LO and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
