Verizon Set to Pay $10M to Settle Consumer Fraud Lawsuit

Consumers have asked a judge to allow preliminary approval of a $10 million settlement that would resolve a consumer fraud lawsuit over late fees charged by Verizon Wireless.

The complaint was filed in 2007 and claims that the company’s charge of a $5 minimum late fee and a $15 reconnect fee was unlawfully meant to increase revenue for the company rather than recover damages, according to Law360 (subscription required).

A spokesperson from Verizon wireless said, “Verizon Wireless incurs costs when customers pay late. Our company's $5 late fee places accountability for late payments on those paying their bills late and ensures that customers who pay their bill on time will not have to subsidize those paying late.”

The settlement would cover former and past customers who paid late fees from June 12, 2003 through April 26, 2012 or December 1, 2004 through April 26, 2012.
