SUNRISE – an advanced telescope on a giant balloon

Start of the Sunrise test flight in September 2007, Ft. Sumner, NM/USA. SSC was there to test fly a technical balloon system.

Media is invited to follow the launch of SUNRISE, a mission to study the structure and dynamics of the solar magnetic field. The telescope, weighing 2 ton, will be carried up to 37 km by a giant balloon (~ 950.000 m2) and fly 4-6 days before landing in Canada.
Place: Esrange Space Center Launch window: The launch window opens on June 1 Date and time: To be decided. In case the launch is delayed or postponed, the programme will subject to change. Those who have announced their interest to participate will be informed.

Programme - 60 min Arrival at Esrange Space Center (at the latest) - 45 min Short presentation of the count down schedule and flight scenario - 30 min Short walk to the view point to follow the launch ± 00:00 Launch of SUNRISE + 15 min Short summery of the launch and flight so far + 30 min Time for interviews

The SUNRISE team consists of scientists from Germany, Spain and USA.

SUNRISE is part of the framework of NASAs LDB (Long Duration Balloon) program. Colombia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) has the overall operational responsibility for the campaign activities and they will be supported by a particular project manager and a launch team from the Swedish Space Corporation.
